Curriculum Vitae of Richard Flynn
1970: Graduated from Newcastle College of Art in England .
1970–78: Began a series of paintings on the subject of North East England communities including 2 summers of work on the Holy Island of Lindisfarne.
1978: Awarded a major sponsorship by the construction company William Leech Limited, receiving a bursary of living expenses for one year. Awarded reception at the Mansion House after purchase of work for the Lord Mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne 's Silver Room.
1979: Solo show of 56 paintings at Laing Art Gallery , Newcastle upon Tyne . The success of this exhibition leads to a further 2½ years sponsorship.
1980-81: Produced a series of portrait and figurative paintings at Dudley Miners Institute. Received several commissions of paintings for Town Halls and Civic Centers in the North of England including Leeds, Middlesborough, Rotherham, Bradford, Warrington and Thameside. Commission for the portrait of the Lord Mayor of Newcastle upon Tyne , Mr. Bennie Abraham. The portrait completion filmed by BBC's “Look North.” 1982: Solo show, Harrogate Art Gallery .
1983: Commissioned by Blyth Valley Council to paint an exterior mural for Blyth town centre. The 36ft x 22ft. Bowes Street mural was completed and installed in 1984, pioneering a new system using acrylic paint on silicate boards.
1985: Commission of five 8' by 4' paintings for Cramlington Shopping Centre entrance. Six Artists of the North East, a traveling exhibition. Newcastle Breweries calendar.
1986: Solo show at Grey's Gallery, Gosforth. 1987: Commission for paintings of the leisure pool at Concordia Leisure Centre.
1988: Artist in residence St Mary's High School, Benton . The conclusion of this work resulted in an exhibition, “Real Connections,” at the Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne .
1989: Resident artist, Town Teacher Center , Newcastle upon Tyne . Prize winner in the Laing Competition at the Mall Galleries, London , followed by a show of ten works in “Celebration Of The North” at the Mall Galleries, London . 1990: Prior to immigrating to Canada with his wife Linda and two children Rachel and Paul, Northumberland County Council organized retrospective exhibition, of 54 works at Seaton Deleval Hall.
1991: Produced separate solo shows, Ring Gallery, Saint John , and Gallery 78 , Fredericton . Two works accepted for the Marion McCain Exhibition at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery , Fredericton . 1993: Founded Acacia Gallery in the Village of Gagetown , New Brunswick . Solo show at Acacia Gallery , 1993-1994.
1995: Solo show, “Crafting Fire,” Beaverbrook Art Gallery , Fredericton , New Brunswick .
1996: Joint exhibition with Alexandrya Eaton, City of Saint John Art Gallery. Artist for Festival by the Sea, Saint John , New Brunswick .
1997: Artist in Residence, RCS Netherwood School , Rothesay , New Brunswick , beginning a three-year relationship with the school. Solo show, “Time of Our Life,” New Brunswick Museum . Curator, “Firm Views,” an exhibition for Patterson Palmer law office in Saint John , New Brunswick .
1998: Built the new Acacia Gallery in Cambridge Narrows , a custom- built Art Gallery with studio space. The gallery has 8 acres of land under development as gardens for subject matter and sculpture. 1999: Solo show Peter Buckland Gallery , Saint John . Curator of “The Art of Business,” an exhibition for Greenarm Management Limited. 2000: Solo show, City of Saint John Art Gallery and Frazee Gallery, Aitken Bicentennial Exhibition Center, “Richard Flynn A Survey Of The Canadian Works.”
2001: McCain's Exhibition, curator Tom Smart, Beaverbrook Art Gallery , Fredericton , New Brunswick .
2002: Acacia Gallery , “Beehive Revisited,” works produced during a six week residency in a Newcastle upon Tyne pub. “Festive Times,” a series of works from the regional blues festivals. 2003: Commission to paint the International Varsity Hockey Series for UNB Fredericton, New Brunswick. Solo show “Beaver Pond Series” at the Peter Buckland Gallery , Saint John . 2004: Completed two years of work on “The Reception,” a large painting to be included in an exhibition celebrating the centenary of Salvador Dali's birth. The work was displayed during an exhibition of Dali's for his centenary at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery , Fredericton .
2005: Commission by The City of Fredericton to produce a painting for presentation to the Prime Minister, Paul Martin. This work is now in the personal collection of Paul Martin. Joint exhibition with photographer James Wilson, Peter Buckland Gallery. Solo exhibition, Fulcrum Gallery, Saint Andrews , New Brunswick . 2006: Artist in Residence, Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival. Excavated second lily pond for subject matter incorporating a performance area. 2007: Created a series of multiple images of multi-coloured roses, 12 by 15 ft. Began Vineyard series of figurative paintings at Motts Landing Vineyard. Exhibited at Acacia Gallery June until September. 2008: Invited artist creating work and group show in Quebec City at the Acadie and New Brunswick Celebrations Tintamarre, 400th Anniversary Quebec . Artist in Residence at the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Kleinberg, Ontario . Began new Saint John series 2009 Work purchased for New Brunswick Legislature. The view from the Hilton series produced at the Hilton Saint John and Hilton Quebec . April Commissioned by the Province of New Brunswick and Saint John Tourism to paint a reception at the Waldorf Astoria NYC.
